Getting started

Do you actually need a website,
or is Facebook enough?

A lot of small businesses run their entire online presence through Facebook or Instagram, and for a while, that works fine. You post a few photos, people message you, jobs come in. So it's a fair question: why bother with a website at all?

The honest answer is that social media is good at one thing: showing people what you've done recently. It's not built to answer the questions a new customer actually has. What do you offer, what does it cost, are you legitimate, can I trust you with my house, my car, my money?

The trust problem

When someone finds a business through a friend or a search and the only thing they can find is a Facebook page, it raises a small question mark. Is this a proper business, or a side hustle? A website answers that instantly. It signals you're established, organised and taking things seriously.

The search problem

Facebook posts don't show up on Google. If someone searches "asbestos removal near me" or "property improvements in [town]", a business with only a Facebook page is invisible. A website gives you a chance to be found by people who've never heard of you and aren't already following you.

So when is Facebook enough?

If you're only getting work through word of mouth and personal referrals, and you're not trying to grow beyond that, a Facebook page might genuinely be all you need for now. But the moment you want to look more established, get found by people searching for what you do, or just stop losing customers to the business down the road with a proper site, that's the point a website starts paying for itself.
